Query Template
SELECT (Login)
User Input (Simulated)
Common SQL Injection Payloads
Vulnerable Query (String Concatenation)
UNSAFE - Do not use in production
SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = 'user_input_here' AND password = 'pass123'
Safe Parameterized Alternatives
Node.js (mysql2)
const [rows] = await connection.execute( 'SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = ? AND password = ?', [username, password] );
Python (psycopg2)
cursor.execute(
"SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = %s AND password = %s",
(username, password)
)Java (PreparedStatement)
PreparedStatement ps = conn.prepareStatement(
"SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = ? AND password = ?"
);
ps.setString(1, username);
ps.setString(2, password);
ResultSet rs = ps.executeQuery();C# (SqlParameter)
using var cmd = new SqlCommand(
"SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = @user AND password = @pass",
connection
);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@user", username);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@pass", password);PHP (PDO)
$stmt = $pdo->prepare(
'SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = :user AND password = :pass'
);
$stmt->execute(['user' => $username, 'pass' => $password]);SQL Injection Prevention Best Practices
1
Always use parameterized queries (prepared statements) instead of string concatenation for SQL.2
Use an ORM (Sequelize, SQLAlchemy, Entity Framework) which generates parameterized queries automatically.3
Apply the principle of least privilege: database accounts should have only the permissions they need.4
Use allowlists for dynamic identifiers like column names and table names that cannot be parameterized.5
Implement input validation as a defense-in-depth measure, but never rely on it as the sole protection.6
Enable WAF (Web Application Firewall) rules and monitor logs for SQL injection attempt patterns.
